Mario Casabona elected new Jumpstart Chairman

Newly elected chairman of Jumpstart NJ Mario Casabon sold his company, ERI, to Honeywell in 2004. Prior to the sale, he made a pitch to Jumpstart for financing. Afterward, he decided to become an investor himself. “I enjoy taking calculated risks. In addition, I can participate in providing financing to science and technology startup companies which, because of lack of secured funding or collateral, would not be able to commercialize a great idea/product/service”

“Angel investing is the professional financing bridge between friends and family and venture capital,” Casabona continued. I can apply my years of experience, customers and business contacts. My goal is to hit a few home runs and be able to brag about them!”

Investors believe that companies worthy of angel financing must have a great product or service that is or will be needed in the near future. “Entrepreneurs must have a well-thought out business plan , through knowledge of the competitive landscape, understanding of cash flow, intimate customer knowledge, intellectual property and most of all and most important, a great management team to launch the company.” Casabona said. “The founders of the company should understand that the angel investors are also interested in contributing management expertise in addition to expecting a high rate of return.”

Some of Jumpstart’s strengths include of 40 plus members who are active investors. Some are cashed out entrepreneurs having sold their businesses, senior corporate executives and serial entrepreneurs. All of whom bring a great deal of vibrancy and intelligence to evaluating and choosing new investments. Jumpstart angels want to the opportunity to invest in a diverse portfolio and share due diligence work and their technical knowledge across high tech sectors.

Casabona, who follows Ken Kay as the most recent Chairman, is committed to the growth of the Jumpstart group in new members and attractive deals and looks forward to continued success for Jumpstart.
